There are certain types of fancy dress costumes that tend to never fall far from favour. These include princesses, fairies, Knights, ninjas and, of course, pirates. However, these staple costumes do rise and fall in popularity too, depending on what cultural events tend to be riding high in the public eye -and with films like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise grossing millions at the box-office, a resurgence of the salty sea dogs was inevitable. Pirate popularity is widespread, and with annual events like International Talk Like A Pirate Day – which takes place on September 19 – grabbing attention as well as boosting cries of ‘ahoy there’ worldwide you can be sure that pirates are at the top of the fancy dress food chain. Dressing up as a pirate may have once been a choice for the boys, but these days there are plenty of pirate costumes for the ladies too, including captain and first mate varieties – so you only have to be a pirate wench if you want to be! Woman can slip into pirate costumes that would curl the hair on your chest and put the lads to shame in these times of pirate-equality. However, it must be admitted that the sight of Johnny Depp in a pirate outfit has done much to boost the popularity of the genre and that many boys will be hoping to emulate the star in their style even if they aren’t able to achieve his money or his looks. From dapper pirates in stripy shirts to salty old sea dogs there are pirate ensembles to satisfy all age groups, with pirate kiddie outfits offering a particularly cute option. If you like to go for the minimal look when choosing your fancy dress outfit, pop on an eye patch and a three cornered hat and people will soon get the gist, but if you’re more of a fan of overblown outfits you’ll find plenty to satisfy your cravings when you plunge into the pirate fancy dress treasure chest. Grab an ornate cutlass, stick a fake parrot on your shoulder and slip into some billowing pirate garb for a scourge of the sea look that is sure to have everyone quaking in their boots – or swooning at your feet! One of the best things about dressing up as a pirate for a big night out or fancy dress party is the licence it gives you to speak in pirate patios for the duration.
